Several surveys that have been completed throughout the years have shown us that according to both males and females, ideally we look for a partner who has white teeth. A key feature that we often draw our eyes to when having conversations can be someone’s smile. Within society, we have a fascination of improving our smile, from charcoal toothpaste to mouthwash, we have the desire to perfect our smile to secure a selfie worth 1,000 likes! So, I thought I would introduce to you my own routine and guide you through my favourite products, to highlight the key products in the market that guarantee a bright, white smile.
Step one, ask yourself what am I eating/ drinking that may impact the whiteness and health of my teeth?
It is so often that we eat food and drinks that impact the colour and health of our teeth, from coffee, green tea to sugary confectionaries. Around 2 billion cups of coffee per day are consumed worldwide, it is evident that we have become a society of coffee lovers, enjoying the caffeine fix to get us through that busy schedule ahead or just simply enjoying a social catch up with our friends. We have also improved our health care regime as a society, with many of us drinking green tea as part of our calorie cutting, slim journey to a smaller waistline. Both of which, are considered factors that impact the health and colour of our teeth. Over 80% of the British population drink green tea or fruit infused green tea products that over time, influences the brightness and whiteness of your smile. Other foods and fruits that include lemons and limes are also detrimental to our teeth, softening the enamel and over time causing yellow stains, due to the fruits high acidity levels. Not only do drinks and food effect the teeth but, smoking is one of the largest contributors to the health and colour of our teeth. Smoking cigarettes discolours the teeth beyond surface stains, penetrating deep in to the enamel over time and causing yellow stains. Whilst I am aware that many people want to enjoy a sweet treat, even a cigarette, it’s key to find products that allow you to continue drinking acidic drinks and also, enjoy a Friday night sugary fix.
Step two, what products would help to improve the whiteness of teeth?
After years of discolouration due to habits of drinking teas and coffee, whitening toothpastes can act as a stain removing power, as many whitening toothpastes contain an element called silica, which helps to visibly improve the colour of your teeth. Whilst they cannot erase the years of discolouration, whitening toothpastes are sold with various stain removing ingredients and quite often include elements of fluoride to penetrate deep in to enamel to help rid those pesky stains! As with whitening toothpastes, mouthwashes can act as an effective method of removing any surface stains that have amounted over numerous years. They are often key to a morning and evening regime, not only improving surface stains, but also helping to eliminate bacteria and improve your breath. Using mouthwash both morning and night helps reduce bacteria build up and can be paired with a whitening toothpaste, to improve overall colour and health of your smile. Teeth whitening strips are a great option to reduce stains both on and below the tooth’s enamel. They are easy to use and offer instant brighter teeth, whether you need to use them as a quick fix for a night out or you follow the guided products number of days to ensure optimum whiteness. Within the products packaging it details the best way to apply the strips, usually ensuring a dry mouth, which allows application of the strips to be much easier and always keeping the strips on for the recommended time. I like whitening strips, there are various strips within the market that are effective and create a whiter smile, although I am a fan of Crest, as they offer enamel-safe ingredients that are used throughout the dentist industry. Tried and tested, Crest whitening strips are said to remove up to 15 years of stains, they are an effective and safe way of home whitening. I also vary which strips I tend to use, I also like Onuge and Advanced Teeth whitening strips, as both are simple to use and apply with ease. The Onuge range also offers varying time limits for their products, which is handy if you are in a rush for a night out and want a quick fix white smile on the go!
